Religion is indeed an interesting subject and its absolutely fascinating how misunderstood almost all religions are - I can surely say that from my experience. This past weekend was one of the most unique experiences for me, as I visited the Mormon Church on the first Sunday of the week, "A Fast Sunday."
In my ironed white shirt and red tie, i walked to the University Parkway Center with my roommates. There was an unusual excitement on our faces. My thoughts wandered as I imagined what my experience will be like. On the way, I kept asking my roommates all sorts of questions that came to my mind, and they replied eagerly. By the time I reached the UPC doorstep, I had a vague idea what the day's proceedings would be. First, we walked into this huge hall with over a hundred people - a lot of them were familiar faces. They all waved to me with a kind and friendly smile as I walked over to the second row where a friend, the ward "grandma" had saved us three seats.
After an opening prayer, the Ward Bishop made some announcements and the sacrament was offered. After singing a couple of hymns, the podium was open for everyone to bear testimony. One by one, a few people got up and walked to the stage. My roommate also wanted to get up but felt too nervous to do so. I talked him into going up together. We both took seats behind the podium and waited for our turn. He went first and delivered an emotional testimony. After he was done, I walked up to the podium. In front of me, a hundred eager faces looking up . I started by introducing myself and where I'm from. Describing how unique of an experience BYU has been for me. I told everyone how much I appreciated the emphasis on morals, and the way it brings out the best out of BYU students. I mentioned that I do not share the same beliefs, but our lifestyles reflect identical moral values.I ended my testimony with a weird, "Thank you all very much" which made the hall dead silent.
At the end of the Sacrament meeting, the Ward Bishop appreciated everyone's commitment towards their faith and thanked me for coming, and sharing my opinion. Many of my friends also came to me, and thanked me for coming. This kind gesture made me feel very good about making the decision to go to church that day.
I think this experience will be a memorable one for me, something that I will always look back to and be glad that i took the initiative to speak to the congregation that day.
What a great experience that must have been for you. Fast Sundays are always something very special as we get to hear the testimonies of those in our ward. If we have an open mind, the spirit will bear witness of the truthfulness of the testimonies being shared. I hope you are enjoying BYU so far, and hope you continue to have good experiences like this one.
